Gold-plated jewellery is not fragile. It is simply particular.
An 18K gold-plated piece is built in layers — a solid base metal, a bonded finish of real gold above it. Treated well, that finish holds its warmth for years. Treated carelessly, it dulls long before it should. The difference is rarely dramatic. It comes down to a handful of small habits.

Last On, First Off
This is the single rule that matters most. Jewellery should be the final thing you put on and the first thing you take off.
Perfume, hairspray, body lotion, sunscreen and setting spray all contain alcohols and oils. They are formulated for skin, not for metal. Sprayed directly onto a plated surface, they leave a residue that clouds the finish and, over time, works at the bond between gold and base. Let your fragrance settle on skin for a minute or two. Then reach for your jewellery.
At the end of the day, reverse the order. Remove earrings and chains before cleansing, before your evening shower, before the gym. The five seconds it takes will add years to the piece.
Keep It Away From Water
Chlorine is the fastest way to strip a gold finish. Salt water is not far behind. Even ordinary tap water, if a piece is left damp, will pit and discolour a plated surface over time.
So: no jewellery in the pool, the sea, the shower or the sink. Take your rings off before washing dishes. Take your chains off before a workout — perspiration is mildly acidic, and prolonged contact does real damage.
If a piece does get wet, dry it immediately with a soft, lint-free cloth. Do not leave it to air-dry. Moisture trapped in a clasp or a link is where tarnish begins.
Clean Gently, Clean Rarely
Most gold-plated jewellery needs nothing more than a dry polish. A soft microfibre cloth, a few light passes along the surface, and the shine returns.
For a deeper clean, use lukewarm water with a single drop of mild, unscented soap. Dip a soft cloth or a very soft brush, wipe gently, rinse briefly, and dry completely. Never scrub. Never soak. The plating is measured in microns — abrasion removes it permanently.
Avoid, without exception: silver dips, jewellery cleaning solutions, ultrasonic cleaners, toothpaste, baking soda and anything marketed as a polish for sterling silver. These are designed to remove a layer of metal. On plated pieces, that layer is the gold.
Store It Properly
Air and humidity are quiet adversaries. Left out on a dresser, a chain will dull faster than one kept in a pouch — and in an Indian monsoon, considerably faster.
Store each piece separately in a soft pouch or a lined compartment. Separation matters as much as the material: gold-plated surfaces scratch against one another, and a tangle of chains in a single dish will leave every piece marked. Keep your storage somewhere cool and dry, away from windows, bathrooms and direct sunlight.
An anti-tarnish strip tucked into the box is a small, worthwhile addition. So is the simple discipline of putting a piece back where it belongs at the end of the night.
Rotate What You Wear
The pieces that fade first are the ones worn every day without pause. Constant contact with skin, fabric and air wears any finish down.
Building a small, considered collection is not indulgence — it is maintenance. Rotating between three or four favourites gives each one time to rest, and it keeps your look from settling into a uniform. A fine chain one week. Sculptural hoops the next. A stacked ring when the occasion calls for it.
Pay particular attention to rings and bracelets. Hands do the most work, and jewellery worn there meets more friction, more water and more soap than anything around your neck or ears. If you wear a ring daily, consider taking it off for tasks — cooking, cleaning, typing at length.
Know What to Expect
Gold plating is a finish, not a solid. Cared for properly, an 18K gold-plated piece will hold its colour for a long time. It will not hold it forever. That is the nature of the material, and it is also what makes demi-fine jewellery what it is — the weight and warmth of gold, at a price that lets you build a real collection rather than a single cautious purchase.
Understand that, and the care becomes easy. A cloth by the jewellery box. A pouch instead of a dish. A habit of taking things off before water. Nothing elaborate.
