Tarnishing isn't inevitable. Most jewellery tarnishes because of how it's stored — not because of what it's made from. A few simple changes to where and how you keep your pieces will dramatically extend how long they stay bright.
Here's what actually works.
Why Jewellery Tarnishes
Tarnishing happens when metal reacts with moisture, oxygen, and sulphur compounds in the air — as well as chemicals from skin products, perfumes, and sweat. The reaction forms a dark layer on the metal's surface.
The key factors: humidity, air exposure, and contact with chemicals. Good storage addresses all three.
7 Storage Habits That Prevent Tarnishing
1. Store Pieces Individually
Throwing all your jewellery into one drawer or box seems convenient until pieces scratch each other, chains tangle, and delicate stones chip from contact. Store each piece in its own small pouch, zip bag, or compartment. Even separating pieces in a divided jewellery box significantly reduces damage.
2. Keep Jewellery Out of the Bathroom
The bathroom is the worst place to store jewellery. High humidity from showers and steam accelerates tarnishing faster than any other environment. A bedroom drawer or vanity away from the bathroom is far better.
3. Use Anti-Tarnish Pouches or Strips
Anti-tarnish pouches absorb the sulphur compounds in the air that cause tarnishing. They're inexpensive and genuinely effective — especially for pieces you don't wear often. You can also add anti-tarnish strips to your jewellery box. Chalk works as a budget alternative.
4. Clean Before Storing
Sweat, skin oils, and perfume residue left on jewellery continue reacting with the metal after you take it off. A quick wipe with a soft cloth before storing removes this residue and significantly slows tarnishing. For 18K gold plated pieces, a dry microfibre cloth is all you need — no liquids.
5. Take Jewellery Off Before Water, Gym, and Skincare
The single most effective habit. Chlorine in pools, sulphur in hot springs, and sweat from workouts are the fastest tarnishing agents. Sunscreen, body lotion, and perfume also react with metals. Put jewellery on last when getting ready, and take it off first when coming home.
6. Use Airtight Bags for Pieces You Rarely Wear
If you have pieces you wear only occasionally — festive sets, special occasion jewellery — store them in zip-lock bags with the air pressed out. Minimal air exposure means minimal oxidation. This is especially effective for American diamond sets that may be worn only a few times a year.
7. Avoid Direct Sunlight
UV light fades and weakens the plating on gold-plated jewellery over time. A drawer or box in a shaded area is better than a display stand on a sunny windowsill, no matter how nice it looks.
The Truth About "Anti-Tarnish" Jewellery
Not all anti-tarnish claims are equal. The difference is in the base metal and plating method.
Standard gold plated jewellery uses a brass or copper base with a thin gold layer applied by electroplating. This plating wears off within months, especially with water or sweat exposure.
Carryallco's 18K gold pieces use 316L surgical-grade stainless steel as the base — a completely corrosion-resistant metal — with genuine 18K gold applied by PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition), a vacuum process that creates a molecular bond 3–5× thicker and harder than electroplating. The result is jewellery that genuinely doesn't tarnish with daily wear. That's why we back it with a 5-year anti-tarnish warranty.
Proper storage still extends the life of even the best-made jewellery. Both matter.
How to Revive Tarnished Jewellery
If a piece has already tarnished, don't write it off. For light tarnish on gold-plated pieces: mix a few drops of mild dish soap with warm (not hot) water, dip a soft toothbrush, gently scrub, rinse with clean water, and dry immediately with a soft cloth. Never soak gold-plated jewellery or leave it wet.
For stone-set pieces, avoid submerging them — instead, clean around the stones with a slightly damp cloth and dry immediately.
Heavy tarnish on plated jewellery often means the plating has worn through, in which case replating is the only solution. Carryallco offers lifetime plating support for our American Diamond pieces — contact us if a piece needs attention.
